Three candidates for county supervisor — incumbent Lynn Bedford and challengers Leroy Ornellas and Carlon Perry — duked it out in a Tracy Press-sponsored candidates night at Poet Christian Elementary School.

Steve Greiner has announced he is closing Tracy Camera & Supply on West 11th Street.

Services have been conducted for Herbert A. “Herb” Massey, 73, a past master of the Mount Oso Masonic Lodge.

West High’s girls basketball team romped over crosstown rival Tracy High, 59-39.

Politics are alive and well at the San Joaquin River Club, where a number of residents are working to oust incumbent President Larry Kahler. (He survived the challenge.)

Walter and Marie Minges have celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.

Megan Knize, a Stanford student from Tracy, is studying French in Paris.

Rollie Swingle, a member of the city planning commission for 14 years, is resigning before moving to Elk Grove.



25 years ago — 1987

The Rev. Stanford S. Davis has announced that after nearly 20 years, he is retiring as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Davis came to Tracy in 1967 from Oakland.

George Abdallah Jr. has been sworn in as trial commissioner at the South County Municipal Court. (He is now a superior court judge.)

Playoff dreams of Tracy High’s boys basketball team were dashed by a 64-59 loss to St. Mary’s. Frank Juarez had 22 points for the Bulldogs.

Tracy’s first Global Affairs Forum in the Tracy Community Center focused on Brazil. Speakers included Geraldo Muzzi, Brazilian consul general in San Francisco. The forum was sponsored by the Tracy Press and the American Association of University Women.



50 years ago — 1962

Top winners of Bank of America Achievement Awards at Tracy High School were Jane Johnson, science and math; Jim Baskette, liberal arts; and Louise Longley, fine arts.

Tracy product Rod Lauren (Roger Strunk) has a starring role in an “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” television drama.

Three members of the Tracy High wrestling team are in the Northern California championships. They are David Soto, Bobby Blanco and Rudy Blanco.

Wallace Stefan of Tracy, a doctoral candidate in entomology at UC Berkeley, is a member of a research team in the Antarctic.

Tracy’s St. Bernard’s Catholic Church is within the new Stockton Diocese headed by Bishop Hugh Donohue.



75 years ago — 1937

City Council members are asking the state Board of Equalization for permission to exceed the tax limit of 5 percent of assessed value.

Dr. J. Frank Doughty of Tracy has been elected a director of the San Joaquin County Medical Society.

Ed Willig scored 16 points as the Banta Signal Oilers basketball team downed Byron, 39-20.



100 years ago — 1912

The sale of 2,800 acres of land on Union Island for $465,000 has been reported. Purchasers are headed by E.T. Tobin of Hibernia Savings and Loan Society of San Francisco.

Work is starting on Hotel Western on Front (Sixth) Street. William Schmidt, owner, said the new two-story brick building is costing some $30,000 to build.
