West jumped out to a 36-12 lead in the first half and continued to dominate in the second half after coach Derek Sprecksel put in all of his backup players, who outscored the Delta Kings 18-7 in the fourth quarter.
“We just want to get better every day. I think we’re improving. Our pressure defense has been a major part of our success,” Sprecksel said.
He added that after Wednesday’s win, the Wolf Pack’s remaining Tri-City Athletic League opponents will be a tough challenge, starting with Edison High in Stockton on Friday. West goes to McNair next Friday to complete the first half of the league season.
“This league is a very good league this year. Edison is a tough team and we’re going to have to play our very best to have a chance to be successful there Friday,” Sprecksel said.
As tough as the TCAL is, the level of play in the league will serve West well when the Sac-Joaquin Section power ratings come out week after next. A high rating for the league means that league leaders will get higher seeds when it comes to forming the playoff brackets.
Sprecksel said his team’s strengths continue to be balanced scoring and a strong bench. Everyone on the team played on Wednesday, and nearly everyone scored. Jaylen Sanders led the way with 12 points, Jordan McIntosh and Damon Sloan scored nine each, Justin Saar scored eight and Kenneth Daye scored six. Ernest Turner scored five, all in the fourth quarter, DeAndre Thomas scored four in the fourth quarter and Hayden Ordone hit a 3-point shot in the fourth.
Varsity boys: Lincoln 55, Tracy 53
The Bulldogs brought determination to the court in the second half of Wednesday’s San Joaquin Athletic Association contest at Lincoln High, but the Trojans were able to hold on for the win.
Lincoln (11-8, 2-1 SJAA) was ahead by eight points at the half and Tracy (8-10, 1-2 SJAA) cut Lincoln’s lead to four points at the end of the third.
“We were unable to execute a couple plays at the end of the game,” Tracy coach Doug Silva said. “We worked hard, but it’s hard to get a league win on the road when you’re in the hole in the first half.”
It makes Tracy’s quest for a favorable standing in the SJAA that much tougher, with Friday’s game at home against Bear Creek a chance to regain some momentum, and a game next Friday against league leader Chavez to finish the first half of the league season.
Leading scorers for Tracy on Wednesday were T.J. Williams with 23 points and Josh Brakkee with 12.
Varsity girls: Weston Ranch 54, Kimball 42
Kimball’s girls (12-6, 2-3 VOL) kept pace with the Cougars (13-5, 4-1 VOL) during the first half of Wednesday’s game at Weston Ranch High. Weston Ranch pulled ahead 39-35 in the third quarter and then put its defense to work to force turnovers and take the game away in the fourth for the 54-42 win.
Allie Schmidt led the Jaguar offense with 19 points, Alexis Clark scored 12, Sarah Nunes scored five, Megan Bhathal, Ayida Peters, and Iris Nelson each scored two, and Sarah Searle scored one.
Sophomore boys: West 43, Stagg 42
The Wolf Pack (8-10, 1-2 TCAL) was down 36-24 at the end of three quarters on Wednesday, but made a fourth-quarter comeback for the 43-42 win. Leading scorers for the Pack were Alvin Crenshaw with 19 points and Jacob Pico with 10.
Sophomore girls: Weston Ranch 50, Kimball 15
The Cougars limited the Jaguars (8-10, 2-3 VOL) to just one field goal int eh first half as the took a 23-3 lead and continued to dominate in the second half. Scoring for Kimball were MacKenzie Decker with four points, Anita Asefi and Aaliyah Asuncion scored three each, Precious Kol and Ariel Early scored two each, and Amari Sims and Andrea Barajas each scored one.
Freshman boys: West 58, Stagg 51
West’s freshmen (7-12, 2-1 TCAL) trailed 29-24 at the half but came out motivated in the second half, with Spencer Carroll leading the way with 22 points for the night, including 17 in the second half. Maxwell Aduako and Kirk Truehill scored nine each, and Kona Chong scored eight, including six of six from the free-throw line.
Freshman girls: Weston Ranch 55, Kimball 15
The Cougars were relentless against the Jaguars (6-11, 1-4 VOL) on Wednesday, taking a 30-6 lead at the half and keeping up the defensive pressure through the second half as they continued to outscore Kimball until the end.
Daniela Barajas and Viel Salgerino scored six each for Kimball, Miranda Ybarra scored two and Joann Luna scored one.
