A group of furry fashionistas will hit the runway Saturday at the third annual Rescues & Runways fashion show at Maurice’s.

The popular clothing shop in the Tracy Outlets Mall, 1005 East Pescadero Ave., will feature strutting models, accompanied by a puppy or two.

“Our main goal is to get dogs and puppies adopted,” Maurice’s store manager Melissa Kotta said. “We have a passion for fashion and a passion for animal needs.”

This year’s event will feature 19 canines from the No Place Like Home Animal Rescue in Tracy. The dogs include mostly small breeds, such as Yorkshire terriers, Pomeranians and, especially, Chihuahuas.

“Lot of puppies,” rescue co-founder Donna Harris said. “We’ve got everything. Kind of a good mix, but we do have a lot of Chihuahuas. It’s been like Chihuahua-palooza at the rescue.”

The idea behind the clothing chain joining forces with a rescue outfit sparked in 2009, and has grown bigger every year since, Kotta said.

In the first year, Maurice’s joined with Animal Rescue of Tracy and managed to raise $50, as well as get a dog and cat adopted. Since then, they’ve partnered with No Place Like Home, and they’ve raised more than $500 and got a few more animals adopted.

When Kotta first approached Harris with the idea to do the fashion show, Harris said she was excited.

“There’s not enough people out there helping these animals,” Harris said. “This year, we probably have close to 30 dogs, so we’ll bring 19 dogs and a half-a-dozen cats.”

Every year, the event grows. This year will feature 23 booths selling a variety of items, ranging from perfumes, clothing and pet supplies. Those attending the event, which runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will also enjoy the fashion show, refreshments and a silent auction.

“It’s a win-win and a great event,” Kotta said. “We just want to beat last year’s (goal).”

No Place Like Home is a nonprofit rescue that specializes in foster care for canines. Each dog is microchipped, spayed or neutered, and updated on annual vaccinations.

All proceeds from Rescues & Runways goes to the local rescue, and attendees will also receive a 20 percent coupon good for any purchase at Maurice’s.
