Dwight Hunter of Tracy was one of this year’s Willie Mac Award winners selected by the Giants Community Fund. Hunter is a coach for the Junior Giants program hosted by the city of Tracy, and coaches from all over California were recognized at a home-plate ceremony at the San Francisco Giants’ AT&T Park on Aug. 28 by Giants great Willie McCovey.
The award goes to coaches who exemplify confidence, integrity, leadership and teamwork in their interactions with youngsters who participate in the Junior Giants programs. About 2,000 coaches serve about 17,000 youths in California, Nevada and Oregon through the Junior Giants, which features free, noncompetitive, coed baseball programs for kids ages 5 to 18.
West grad playing at Central College in Iowa
West High graduate Andrew Harvey begins his season as a freshman defender with the Dutch soccer team of Central College in Pella, Iowa. The Dutch return after a 13-5, fourth-place finish last year, just one game out of first place in the NCAA Division III Iowa Conference. The Dutch are 2-1 so far this year.
