Carole Merrill was rushed to Sutter Tracy Community Hospital that Tuesday morning, after paramedics received a call for a teacher who had a medical emergency. When she was taken to the hospital, medics reported she had a faint pulse.
She died Aug. 22, according to a press release from the Jefferson School District.
Merrill was a 42-year-old mother of four, and was hired on full-time at the Jefferson School District in 2010 after working as a substitute for several years.
“Carole Merrill was an extremely hard working teacher who put long hours and a tremendous amount of passion into her students,” said Dana Eaton, the district’s superintendent. “The Traina staff is a family and they are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. They are supporting each other and supporting their students through this difficult time.”
Eaton said a letter was sent home to parents of Traina students, and counseling is being offered to students and staff alike.
“Carole was a beloved staff member and parent at Traina School,” wrote Principal Susan Moffitt. “The Traina School community and the Jefferson School District as a whole grieve her loss.”

Even if she is not with us she continues to inspire my son to do his best in school this year. Her note reading 'best wishes in the 6th grade,' is posted on his wall.
Her sudden death has saddened our family so much. She was a special lady and will always be in our hearts.
To the Merrill family, we hope you find peace in your memories of her. You will remain in our hearts.
Sincerely,
