The chase, originated in Hayward, involved a silver Mercedes reportedly registered to a man wanted in connection with several Bay Area killings. The two men inside the car kept police at bay, going from the South Bay Freeway to Interstate 880, then onto Interstate 580 and Interstate 205 outside of Tracy.
Tracy CHP Sgt. Gary Burlingame said local forces were told the pursuit was headed their way at 8:25 p.m.
As the chase approached Tracy — with police officials from Hayward, Fremont and East Palo Alto, and several SWAT vans and a CHP helicopter involved — Tracy CHP set up a strip of spikes to stop the fleeing car.
CHP set up teams at I-205, I-580 and I-580 at Patterson Pass, Burlingame said. As the chase approached, the team at I-205, near MacArthur Drive, deployed its spike strips.
“As his tires were going flat, he continued … on Interstate 5 to the Mossdale on- and off-ramp,” he said.
When the car finally stopped, the Fremont SWAT team moved in and took the two men into custody. It was later discovered that they were not the men wanted for the five killings, but the two now face several charges related to the chase.
