Preparations are progressing for the trial of a man accused of killing a 20-year-old Tracy man, following a pre-trial conference Monday, June 20.

The prosecution and defense attorneys in the Edgar Jose Canseco murder trial met in Stockton Superior Court on Monday for his readiness hearing. Both parties agreed on the need for further pretrial discussions at 10 a.m. July 26 in Department 33 to prepare for the upcoming trial.

Canseco was arrested in connection with the killing of Kevin Prater II the night of Sept. 15.

Prater was shot as he drove along Sixth Street with his girlfriend in the front passenger seat and 20-year-olds Emmanuel Mendoza and Canseco in the backseat.

Police say that when Prater stopped his car, a third man, James Stancampiano, came up behind the car and shot Prater once in the chest. Police said the killing was an ambush by the three men, who fled after the shooting.

Canseco was arrested a day later, and he remains in San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp without bail. His charges include murder, shooting at an occupied motor vehicle, attempted robbery and street terrorism.

Stancampiano and Mendoza remain at large, though Tracy Police Department has offered a reward for information leading to their arrest.

A billboard in the form of a wanted poster depicting the two wanted men has been placed near 11th Street and Grant Line Road. The billboard has photos of Stancampiano and Mendoza, as well as Tracy Police Department contact information, and a second billboard with the same information has been erected in the Stockton area.

Authorities think the two men might be hiding out in Mexico.

Canseco is scheduled to be tried at 9 a.m. Sept. 26 in Department 33 in Stockton Superior Court.

15 minutes in the chair should cure society of this scourge.
