Eleven local athletes have qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters track and field meet next week at Sacramento City College. They include five Tracy and West athletes who qualified on Wednesday at the Division I trials at Elk Grove High, two Kimball girls who qualified Thursday at the Division IV finals at Modesto Junior College, and three more from West and another from Tracy who qualified Friday at the Division I finals. The top 10 athletes in each Division I event move on to Masters, and the top six from Division IV move up.

Friday’s qualifiers include West High junior Nina Pritchett, who placed third in Division I on Friday with her throw of 118 feet, 2 inches, her best throw yet. She previously qualified in the shot put on Wednesday with a throw of 35-10.

Pritchett is making her second trip to the Masters meet, having qualified in the shot put last year. Her experience from last year gave her confidence this week.

“Coming to sections for the second time I felt at lot more comfortable. I knew who I was going to compete against. They’re seniors and I’m just a junior so it felt good winning third place,” she said, adding that West coaches Joe Raco and Marco Marchini give her the support at practice and workouts that will prepare her for next week.

West senior Ta’lor Wilburn qualified in two events as well. In the high jump she placed seventh and cleared the bar at 4-11, and in the triple jump, she went 37-00 for fifth place. Also qualifying on Friday was West’s Analisa Green, who placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 112-02, and West junior Deon Pinder qualified in the triple jump with a sixth-place mark of 44-06.

Tracy High added one more qualifier as freshman Blair Hurlock placed eighth in the 3200 meters with a time of 9:43.66. Hurlock said afterward that the intensity of the competition helped him get his best time yet. He started at the back of the crowd and gradually worked his way up. With about a half-mile to go he picked up the pace and moved into the top 10.

“I just try to keep a comfortable pace because it’s a long race. You can’t go out too fast and waste your energy. I try to save it up for the last mile,” he said, adding that he was confident all along that he could finish strong. “I was looking at the seed times earlier and my time was in the top 10, so I knew I just had to maintain what I did last week in league.”

Two athletes who qualified on Wednesday also competed in Friday’s championship races. West senior Will Kaigler finished eighth in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.57, and Tracy High junior Rondre Skidmore was eighth in the 100-meters with a time of 11.52.

Kimball athletes headed to the Masters meet are sophomore Jalayah Douglass, who was third in the discus with a throw of 107-01, and freshman Francesca Loayza, who was sixth in the 3200 meters with a time of 12:03.63. They qualified at Thursday's Division IV finals.

Wednesday's qualifiers included West High senior Will Kaigler. He came in first in his heat in the 110-meter high hurdles and fourth overall, with a time of 15.82.

Tracy High junior Rondre Skidmore qualified in the 100-meter dash. He was first in his heat and fourth overall with a time of 11.20.

West sophomore Megan Grady finished 10th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.22.

Tracy High senior Brooke Butcher qualified in the pole vault with a 10th-place jump of 8 feet, 11 inches on Wednesday. Her teammate Ariane Cook also jumped 8-11, but was 11th-place based on her number of attempts.

West junior Nina Pritchett qualified with her fourth-place throw in the shot put, 35 feet, 10 inches.
