A community garden’s grand opening this past weekend drew more than 50 people to a parcel of land at MacArthur Drive, Third Street and Mount Diablo Avenue.

The 4-acre plot, set up as a place where Tracy residents and organizations can rent a bit of land to grow fruits and vegetables, is owned by the First Presbyterian Church of Tracy and is open to all locals.

The space, originally slated for a new church, became a spot for green thumbs after an effort to build a community garden at Fine Park at Franklin and Eaton avenues failed to materialize. Members of the church have prepared 41 12-foot-by-25-foot plots with water hookups that are ready for planting.

Residents interested in farming their own plots should call Roger Winkler through the church office at 835-3247. A fee is charged to cover the cost of watering the land.
