West athletes head to Fresno for track finals

West High’s track and field team will send athletes to the California High School Indoor Invitational “Run for the Dream” meet Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Save Mart Center in Fresno.

Athletes include the boys 4x200m team, which qualified at the California State Indoor Qualifier at U.C. Berkeley on Feb. 5. Team members include Deon Pinder, Elisha Mitchell, D.J. Watson and Julian Gray. They qualified with a time of 1:34.75.

Athletes also qualified at the Feb. 5 California State Indoor Qualifier at U.C. Davis on Feb. 12.

Qualifyers in the boys 55m sprint were D.J. Watson with a time of 7.16 seconds, and Rami Booth with a time of 7.19 seconds. Girls to qualify were Megan Grady, 7.67 seconds, Shannel Hawkins, 7.96, Brizje Hampton, 8.24, Emily Hernandez, 8.54, and Estefani Gomez, 8.64.

Elijah Mitchell will also compete in the boys triple jump after he qualified at Davis with a jump of 45-10.75, and Pinder also will compete after he logged a jump of 43-08 at Davis. Mitchell also qualified for the state long jump competition with a mark of 21-04.5 at Davis.

West athletes have been competing in the indoor track and field season during the winter, and will get into the spring track and field season when competition begins next week, starting with a meet at Granada High in Livermore next Thursday and the East Bay Invitational in Danville on Saturday, March 5.
