Student speakers from three high schools in Tracy will compete Feb. 28 in the area finals of the annual Rotary speech contest.
Representing Tracy schools after winning speech competitions sponsored by Tracy Rotary clubs:
• Martin Garcia, West High sophomore, representing Tracy Sunrise Rotary Club
• Upinderpreet Gill, Tracy High junior, representing Tracy Rotary Club
• Aloukika Shah, Kimball High junior, representing Tracy Rotary Club
They will compete in the Feb. 28 area contest at the Tracy Methodist Church along with speakers representing Rotary clubs in Manteca, Lathrop and Ripon.
The winner of the area contest will compete in the Rotary District 5220 speech finals. The district-wide winner will be a featured speaker at District 5220’s conference in the spring.
All the speeches are based on Rotary International’s 2010-11 theme, “Building Communities, Bridging Continents.”
In second place in the Tracy Sunrise Rotary contest Jan. 26 was West senior Kaitlyn Hawkins, and in third was West senior Gabriela Acevedo. Honorable mentions went to Trevor Lewis, Jill Hamilton and Rishika Chauhan, all seniors at West.
Southside group welcomes officers
Members of the South Side Community Organization will gather for dinner and the installation of officers from 6 to 9 p.m. March 3 at El Castillo Restaurant, 600 N. Central Ave.
The officers will be Raymond Morelos, president; Larry Fragoso, vice president; Annie McManus, secretary; Linda Vega, treasurer; and Walter Gouveia, Frank Garcia, Susie Lopez, Jose Salcedo and Louie Romo, board members at-large.
