Overton named among Top 10 in UFL

After his first season with the Omaha Nighthawks and his second season with the United Football league, Tracy High graduate Matt Overton has been named among the UFL’s Top 10 two-year players.

Overton said the acknowledgement came as a surprise, because players in his position — a center for the special teams — generally don’t get attention unless they make a mistake. The UFL’s Dusty Sloan noted in naming the Top 10 that the Overton’s teams, the 2009 Florida Tuskers and the 2010 Nighthawks, were never plagued by bad snaps, an accomplishment that tends to be underrated.

Overton, who was with the Seattle Seahawks briefly at the start of the 2010-11 season, said he is back to contacting NFL teams and hopes to make an NFL roster by the time the 2011-12 season starts.

Cougars at Elk Grove College Showcase

The California Cougars Girls U18 soccer team finished 1-1 at the one-day Elk Grove College Showcase on Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Bartholomew Sports Complex in Elk Grove.

The Cougars dropped their opening showcase game 1-0 to Davis Legacy 95 when Davis’ Anna Maria Gilbertson scored with 30 seconds left to win the game. The Cougars rebounded and defeated Cap FC United 2-0 behind goals by Gina Bellato and Kylie Gacer. Jamie Flores and Kelsey Gini had an assist each. Goalkeeper Brianna Murawski posted the shutout behind the strong defensive play of Bellato, Grace Cabri, Karly Dunning, Gini, Vannesa Haro and Alyssa Strope.

About 20 to 25 college coaches were in attendance for the one-day showcase.

The Cougars will next compete in the prestigious SC Del Sol President's Day Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz., in mid-February.
