A class at West High School designed to boost the scores of falling-behind math students has been recognized by the California School Boards Association for its success.

The I.M.P. Support program, headed by teacher Debbie Wittkowske, received a Golden Bell Award in early December.

According to Tracy Unified School District spokeswoman Jessica Cardoza, the class at West helps students who are two or three years below grade level in mathematics catch up with their peers, with a goal of passing the California High School Exit Exam.

Cardoza said the students who participate in the program have shown dramatic improvement on both California standardized tests and the high school exit exam and have passed Algebra I at a much higher rate.
