A driver veered off a dark country road and crashed into a tree, trapping him in the wreckage for half an hour early Tuesday evening.

The Oldsmobile sedan was traveling west on Von Sosten Road about a quarter mile from Byron Road when the driver drifted off the roadway just after 5:30 p.m. The car smashed into a large tree on the right shoulder of the two-lane road, crushing the front of the car and pinning the driver.

Two small children and an adult passenger were not seriously injured in the crash, but three engine crews worked for about half an hour to free the driver. The Jaws of Life were used to cut away a section of the driver’s door and passenger compartment.

The driver was taken to Sutter Tracy Community Hospital with a serious leg injury. Von Sosten Road was closed for a short time to allow emergency crews to work.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident and said the cause is most likely because of driver inattention.

No other cars were involved in the crash.
