Melissa Chantel Huckaby, 28, of Tracy, is a Sunday school teacher. She has a 5-year-old daughter. She’s a single mom.

Melissa Suzanne Huckaby, 28, of Manteca, is also a Sunday school teacher. She, too, has a 5-year-old daughter and is a single mom.

The eerie similarities have made life a living hell for the second Huckaby ever since her Tracy namesake was arrested last week on suspicion of kidnapping, raping and killing 8-year-old Tracy girl Sandra Cantu.

“I get death threats all the time,” said the Manteca Huckaby, who also has an 8-year-old child and lives with her parents. “I’ve had news vans at my house — my picture has been all over the media. I’m honestly scared for my safety.”

Her parents, Cyndi and Stan Huckaby of Manteca, said they’ve gotten hundreds of phone calls from CNN, Geraldo Rivera, from Nancy Grace — every media outlet imaginable — asking for a Melissa Huckaby.

But they were calling the wrong one.

The family worries about that the outrage against the woman charged in court this week will be directed toward their daughter if the mix-up isn’t clarified.

“All it takes is for one person to take matters into their own hands,” mother Cyndi said, fighting back tears as she thought about something bad happening to her daughter. “All of a sudden our lives are turned around. And it’s not our fault.”

Like many people in the community, the Huckaby family in Manteca mourns the loss of little Sandra, who was buried today.

“We’re just as devastated as everyone else,” said Cyndi. “And now we have to worry about this, about my daughter’s safety.”

An uncle of Manteca’s Melissa Huckaby, Pat Huckaby of Tracy, says his three sons, Tyler Huckaby, 15, of Tracy High School, and 12-year-old Bryce Huckaby of Hawkins Elementary, dread going back to class when spring break ends next week.

The Manteca Huckaby has had to talk to folks at her children’s daycare, at her church and at work to let them know about the case of mistaken identity.

“So everyone in my life knows about the mix-up,” she said. “I just want everyone else in the country to know.”

Her MySpace account got so many threatening messages that she had to close it down. She worries, she said, because she had uploaded photos of her young daughters.

The Manteca Huckaby attended West High School and graduated from Tracy High School in 1999. She married and divorced in her early 20s, like the Huckaby behind bars now.

Only the jailed Huckaby’s maiden name is Lawless. Huckaby is the other woman’s maiden name. The Huckaby unrelated to the Sandra case has started using her ex-husband’s name at the end of hers — Huckaby-Fudala.

“It helps a little bit,” she said.

The Huckaby from Manteca moved back with her parents after her divorce. She works in Stockton and volunteers at church regularly.

“Hopefully this will all blow over soon,” Huckaby said of the ordeal. “I just want to get back to life as usual.”

In the meantime, Huckaby said she’ll stay near friends and family when she goes out. She’ll consider getting pepper spray and will call her parents to let them know where she is at all times so they don’t worry someone attacked her.

Like her daughter, Huckaby’s mom Cyndi just wants her family’s privacy back.

“This is definitely not a 15 minutes of fame I would ever wish on anybody.”

what has happened to "manteca MH" is completely ridiculous..i go to school with the "manteca MH" nephew,Tyler, and I can tell it has been hard on him and his family. I would like to apologize for all of the idiots out there in this world, the ignorant, and the people that made this family's life hard.

Completely Ridiculous...

fortheunderdog, LOL about the url for the jail, as a way to contact the incarcerated MH.

Takes a freakin' genius, when they say all over the news and any article you read that she is incarcerated.

My sympathy to the MH in Manteca. I think I'd change my last name. God forbid some nut looks her up. It's like being named Charles Manson, from the same town, but not "the" Charles Manson.

MomOfFive,

You hit the nail on the head. There are more illiterates out there than there are in custody.

Have people not read that the accused Melissa Huckaby is in jail? If she is in jail, then why would they call a woman in Manteca who is not in jail?

I am sooooo sorry this happened to her. I went to Middle School with the innocent Melissa, and when I heard about her receiving death threats it really upset me. Someone I knew from the same Middle School had posted a bulletin on Myspace after the murderer was arrested that she couldn't believe it was the same girl we went to school with. I posted my own bulletin telling her and others they were wrong and to imagine if that happened to you. To the innocent Melissa, God bless you and your family through this horrific ordeal. And to the accused Melissa Huckaby, I pray justice prevails for all the innocent lives you ruined; Sandra's and her family, your daughter and family, and many others who were and are affected by your pure hate for humanity.

What is really a shame is the fact that those people who are hounding the INNOCENT Melissa aren't paying attention when they read the paper or watch televised news. In NO paper, and NO tv news program have I read or heard the city of Manteca being brought up with the ARRESTED Melissa. Manteca may have the same AREA CODE as Tracy but the prefixes are completely different. Plus, the ARRESTED Melissa can be reached in the San Joaquin County Jail.

If you need to know their phone number or who is in custody try this site:

Wow - reading this article I feel heartache for the family of this young woman who lives in Manteca. People seriously need to get a life and if you are a follower of the case with Sandra then you would already know that the "real" Melissa is behind bars and at no way shape and form can she be living in Manteca with her family. Leave her alone!!! Melissa Suzanne shouldn't even have to explain who she is considering AUTHORITIES have the person in custody!!! Bless all of your hearts!

It's great to read and see this correction being made. I hope those who verbally attacked the innocent Melissa will get the word and will be back with the same intensity, and give her the apologies that she deserves.

The next time you think your having a bad day, just think of this poor girl.

Wow TooMuchAnger, that's funny you mention that... The fact that 'hate' makes people kill innocent people... Yet you have been defending the very person that's "suspected" of killing an innocent child... which MH more then likely is the one that did it... Lets not be a hypocrite TooMuchAnger...

That is what hate does to humans. Makes them kill innocent people. All those haters need to get some help. Wonder how many innocent people they have been hurting all of their lives?

Why am I not surprised that Geraldo Rivera and Nancy Grace would hound an innocent person for their ratings.. For the safety and well being of this woman and her family the news media need "to get it right the first time"..

Yes, to those morons who did this to the GOOD Melissa, learn to read. I would have never gotten them mixed up because I knew, by READING that the accused lives in Tracy at the mobile home park.

You all owe her a HUGE apology and then take a long look in the mirror to reasses your behavior.

Now that the media is covering more on the GOOD MELISSA HUCKABY from Manteca, the predator of innocent people in placing hateful calls better leave them alone. Take a good look at the picture, do not confuse the two!

She does not need this darkness over her head!

I know that this woman really does not want to say anything she is just glad its over and may peace be with her. But as a man, a U.S. Navy Veteran, and a father of now five grown adult children two being female, allow me to say the following not in her name but in mine.

This is to all the very small brained and narrow minded morons out there who caused this women to be afraid for her safety because she had the same name as this criminal. just wondering what if her name was Jane doe? you owe this women a serious and a huge I'M SORRY!!YOU YEA YOU! You KNOW WHO YOU ARE, YEA you! BRAINLESS WONDERS. you pea brain idiots. Do you think you could do anymore stupid things. ever heard of Karma it means what goes around sooner or later comes around. and fate has its way of justice. Don't ever do anything like that again because it shows that YOU! don't know what you are doing you knucleheads
