San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom was one of a handful of elected officials and others who turned out for the groundbreaking of a treatment plant that will use ultraviolet light to purify San Francisco's water supply.

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission will build the $112 million plant on West Vernalis Road.

The new plant is expected to open in 2012, treat 315 million gallons of water a day from the Hetch Hetchy reservoir and quench the thirst of 2.5 million Bay Area residents.

San Joaquin County Supervisor Leroy Ornellas of Tracy said he hopes the plant will create hundreds of jobs locally.
