Tracy High senior wrestler Dalton Gualco won four consecutive matches, pinning two of his opponents, to claim the gold medal in the 126-pound weight class at the Pirates Invitational tournament Saturday, Dec. 28, at Pittsburg High.
It was the first gold medal of the season for Gualco, who is 12-4 this year in individual matches.
He expects to face tougher competition at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I-A subsection meet in late February. Gualco competed at last year’s subsection meet after placing third in his weight class at the San Joaquin Athletic Association tournament.
“It definitely helped me improve to where I can become a better wrestler for subs,” Gualco said. “It’s really just due to the hard practices and the time the coaches put into it.”
Gualco won a 9-0 major decision in his first match, pinned his second opponent in 5 minutes, 14 seconds and won his semifinal match by pin in 3:03. He beat James Trayne of Middleton High on a 19-3 technical fall in the championship match.
Also medaling at the Pirate Invitational was Tracy junior Noah Blackwell (160). Blackwell lost his first match and then won four in a row, including two pins.
Seven more Tracy wrestlers competed, and their combined performances put the Tracy team in eighth place out of 32 teams with 64.5 points. The tournament winner was San Benito High with 207.5 points.
Tracy wrestlers who earned medals at the junior varsity level were Jap Gill (160), first; Robert Moore (132), second; Luke Johnson (152), second;, Steven Silva (220), third; and Dominic Jordan (152), fourth.
