Employees and former workers at Taylor Farms, 1820 N. MacArthur Drive, joined members of Teamsters Local 601 for a rally outside the processing plant Nov. 14.

Maria Alvarado, Teamsters 601 secretary-treasurer and member of the California State Cannery Council, said Taylor Farms workers approached the union six months ago wanting help to organize the workforce.

Alvarado said complaints of long shifts without breaks, unsafe working conditions and a lack of benefits were behind the desire to join the teamsters.

Alvarado said they are continuing to hold conversations with the Taylor Farms workers on organizing with the Teamsters Local 601.

About two dozen people rallied on the sidewalk in front of the business Nov. 14 as speakers talked about harassment that employees are facing as the union tries to organize the workers.

Carlos Villapudua, San Joaquin County 1st District supervisor, joined the rally.

Security from Taylor Farms watched from the gate as the crowd held signs and chanted for more than an hour in front of the business.
