Girls basketball teams of seventh and eighth graders from Williams and Freiler middle schools faced off on Thursday, May 24, at West High in the championship game of the Tracy Boys & Girls Club girls basketball league.

The Williams team won the championship 34-15, emerging as the top team from five schools in town, also including North, Monte Vista and Kelly schools. More than 100 girls participated in the league, hosted by the Boys & Girls Club and Tracy Unified School District.

Kelly Knight Low, director of the Boys & Girls Club, said that the club sponsored all of the players on the condition that they maintain good grades, in keeping with the club’s goal of promoting academic success, sportsmanship and good health.

All players had to have a 2.0 grade point average or better and no F’s in order to play. Low added that the incentive to play inspired some of the girls to bring up their grades so they could join a team.
