The Jaguars (7-5, 2-2 VOL) must hang on to second place in the VOL to reach the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs. They have games on the road next week and the week after against Sonora and Ripon, teams the Jaguars beat in the first half of the VOL season.
The Kimball girls held Oakdale to a close game into the start of the third quarter Wednesday, even as they dealt with foul calls that often left the Jaguars a player short on Oakdale’s attacks.
Kimball junior Colby Chase said playing Oakdale (4-0 VOL) prepared her team for tougher competition.
“They’re really aggressive. It’s a good team to go against,” she said. “This game will hopefully set the stage and give us more stuff to practice for the next couple games coming up.”
Chase scored for Kimball in the first quarter and sophomore Kaitlyn Traut scored in the second quarter on an assist from Courtney Moberg. Oakdale held a 4-2 lead at the half, and Traut scored another at the start of the third quarter to get within one goal of Oakdale. The Mustangs scored a goal in the third and another in the fourth to make it a 6-3 game.
Varsity boys: Oakdale 16, Kimball 6
The Mustangs (2-2 VOL) executed effective passing to get close to the Kimball goal as Oakdale charged out to a 12-2 lead at the half.
Kimball scored in the first half on shots by Trevor Trew and Logan Steinberger. Trew scored another in the second half. Reese Maxfield scored two goals, and Justin Riccobono also scored.
West vs. Tokay
The West High water polo teams’ chances to make the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs evaporated Tuesday, Oct. 9, as the Wolf Pack boys and girls teams both lost at home to Tokay.
West will finish the Tri-City Athletic League season in third place behind St. Mary’s and Tokay. The top two teams in the TCAL go to the Division I playoffs.
West will close out its season with tournament play this weekend, Oct. 12 and 13, at the Western States girls tournament in Modesto, and next weekend, Oct. 19 and 20, at the DeLong boys tournament in Modesto.
Varsity boys: Tokay 17, West 4
West’s varsity boys (12-8, 2-4 TCAL) created offensive opportunities, but the Tokay defense kept the Wolf Pack from getting close to the goal, and most of West’s shots went wide or were blocked.
Tokay (3-2 TCAL) used its speed and passing to find the open shots on West’s goal to take a 10-0 lead before West’s Chris Weaver scored his team’s first goal near the end of the second quarter.
Kevin Oetken scored another goal in the third quarter; Bradley McCain scored at the start of the fourth; and Romeo Francisco passed to Jacob Thomassen, who scored another for West in the fourth.
Varsity girls: Tokay 12, West 5
Tokay (3-2 TCAL) shutout West (5-11, 2-4 TCAL) in the first quarter and had an 8-1 lead at the half.
West scored in the second quarter, when Geraldine Vasquez pushed through the Tokay defense for a shot right in front of the goal. Tokay had a 10-1 lead in the fourth quarter before Cassidy Waters scored four goals for her team in the last two minutes.
Tracy vs. Bear Creek
Tracy’s water polo teams fell behind in the San Joaquin Athletic Association with losses to visiting Bear Creek on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Tracy High.
Varsity girls: Bear Creek 15, Tracy 8
Tracy’s girls (0-3 SJAA) lost an early advantage as the Bruins overcame the Bulldogs’ 4-3 first-quarter lead to make it a 7-6 game in Bear Creek’s favor at half.
Annie Foote scored three goals for Tracy, Casey Eddy two goals, Allie Britt scored a goal and had four assists and Megan Jessen and Makennah Bailey also scored goals. Dallyce Marglon had nine saves in the goal.
Varsity boys: Bear Creek 15, Tracy 9
The Bruins had a 10-3 lead at the half, enough to secure the win.
Taylor Mellick scored two goals and had three steals for Tracy (1-3 SJAA), and Anthony Singh and Ian Hutton also scored two goals each. Chris Kennedy scored a goal and had three steals and Michael Motyka and Austin Lowe also scored goals. Vincent Mello had 10 saves in the goal and Chaz Samaniego had five saves in the goal.
