West 3, Kimball 0
West High hosted its first home volleyball match of the season against the visiting Jaguars of Kimball High. The Wolf Pack (1-2) won it in three games, 25-21, 25-10, 25-14. It was the first regular-season game for the Jaguars, who are now 0-1.
The first game was an even matchup until West senior Mellisa Villacarte came to the service line for a series of score, with help from senior Tatiana Aiasau and junior Kalani Vaughns, who had key blocks and shots at the net to score for their team. Aiasau had seven kills, six aces and four blocks for the night, and Vaughns had eight kills and seven assists. Jill Anastasio also contributed seven kills.
“I was determined to get everything,” junior setter and right side hitter Vaughns said. “We’re so determined to beat Kimball. It’s almost as exciting as playing Tracy. Don’t let anything touch the ground, hit as hard as I can and just play smart.”
She sees strong hitting and blocking on her team, and is also impressed with her teammates’ ability to pass and set up shots.
“We’re ready for Tracy. Just like this game.”
Vaughns led West at the service line to start the second game and helped put West into a strong lead, with Miranda Gannon also contributing, racking up seven kills for the night. The third game saw West’s Analyssa Eclevia also serving to help extend West’s lead, though the competition in the final game grew more intense as both teams defended well.
Kimball’s Megan Bhathal was effective at the service line with six aces, Jamie Lam and Sara Searle also helped the Jaguar team score and Christy Brown had 10 assists.
West’s sophomores won in three, 25-10, 17-25, 15-3, and West’s freshmen beat Kimball in two games, 25-10, 25-23.
Tracy 3, Lathrop 2
Tracy’s volleyball team made a comeback on Tuesday night to beat the visiting Lathrop team in five games at Tracy High, putting the Lady Bulldogs at 3-0 this season. Tracy started with a win and then found itself in a must-win situation for the fourth and fifth games.
Julia Jurado led the Tracy team with 17 aces for the night, with backup from all of her team. Jenny Barwig provided 15 assists and had five aces, Casey Eddy scored seven aces and four kills and had nine digs, Angela Mariani scored four aces and six kills, and had seven digs, Jasmin Clarke had six kills, Mika Fithian had three kills, seven assists and a block, and Kimberly Paschal had a block.
Alessandra Rodriguez served 12 points in a row to start the first game for Tracy’s sophomores, who went on to beat Lathrop 25-11, 25-15. Tracy’s freshmen beat Lathrop 25-17, 25-21.
West at Johansen Tournament
West High’s varsity team placed third in the Johansen High Tournament on Saturday in Modesto, going 7-5 for the tournament. West finished behind first-place Hilmar and second-place Denair.
Analyssa Eclevia led West’s offense with 15 kills and 22 aces over 12 games. Miranda Gannon contributed 20 kills and seven aces, Kalani Vaughns had 17 kills, eight 8 aces and 29 assists, Bea Payumo contributed four kills and five aces, Tatiana Aiasau had 15 kills, three aces and nine blocks, Danielle Schmig had seven aces and nine assists, Jill Anastasio had 16 assists and two aces, and Kate Bell had four kills and eight blocks.
Tracy 3, Sierra 0
Tracy High’s volleyball team (2-0) took a 3-0 win at Sierra High on Thursday. The Lady Bulldogs and the Timberwolves played a couple close games, with Tracy hanging on for scores of 25-23, 25-12, 25-23.
Angela Mariani led on offense with eight kills and four aces, and also had five digs. Julia Jurado scored five aces and had five digs, Jazmin Clarke scored five kills, Casey Eddy scored four kills and had nine digs, Mika Fithian had four aces and 10 assists, and Jenny Barwig had two aces and eight assists
Tracy’s sophomores won in two sets, 25-8, 25-14. Tracy’s freshmen started with a close first set on Thursday at Sierra, but the Timberwolves came back in the second and third sets for scores of 24-26, 25-16, 15-12 in Sierra’s favor.
Tracy 3, Weston Ranch 2
Tracy High’s varsity volleyball team won its first match of the season on Wednesday at Tracy High against the visiting Cougars from Weston Ranch High School. The teams went the distance, with scores of 19-25, 25-13, 25-15, 20-25 and 15-11.
Jazmin Clarke scored 10 kills for the night, and Jenny Barwig logged eight aces and 16 assists. Julia Jurado and Angela Mariani had six aces each, and Mariani had eight digs. Casey Eddy had 11 digs and Mika Fithian had 10 assists.
The sophomore team beat Weston Ranch 2-1 with scores of 25-9, 13-25 and 15-7, with Tracy pulling ahead in the third game on a series of aces from Michelle Laiola. The Tracy freshmen also won with scores of 25-14, 25-16.
