Volleyball: String of wins gives Bulldogs shot at title

The Bulldogs are now in a race for the San Joaquin Athletic Association league title after their latest win, 3-2 over visiting Lodi on Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Junior libero Casey Eddy-Berry said that previously Tracy’s SJAA rivals Lodi and Lincoln seemed unbeatable, but this year Tracy (15-2, 6-1 SJAA) has beat Lodi twice.

"It’s a really good feeling because we’ve never beat them before. To beat them twice shows that we’ve got this, and we can work together," Eddy-Berry said. She added that Wednesday’s win will make Tracy’s match on Monday, Oct. 28, against Lincoln, a contest to see if Tracy and Lincoln could share the SJAA title.

Tracy coach Mahina Tankersley said the team is clicking at just the right time.

"I’m really enjoying the chemistry they have with each other and the trust that they’ve gained in each other," Tankersley said.

Tracy beat Lodi in five sets on Wednesday with scores of 18-25, 25-11, 25-19, 15-25, 15-5.

Junior Jenna Wesely scored 10 kills, and junior Mika Fithian had six kills, five aces and 23 assists.Bekah DelaRosa scored seven kills and Eddy-Berry had 15 digs.

Tracy also won in three sets over Franklin on Monday, Oct. 21, in Stockton, with scores of 25-9, 25-13, 25-15, and beat Bear Creek at home on Oct. 17 with scores of 25-20, 23-25, 22-25, 25-9, 15-13.

Tokay 3, West 1

The Wolf Pack lost after four close sets at Tokay High in Lodi in Tri-City Athletic League play on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

Tokay won with set scores of 25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23.

West senior Merinesa Saaga was the Wolf Pack’s (18-11, 4-3 TCAL) top attacker with 15 kills.

Junior Kate Bell had three aces and six blocks, and junior Sierra Duggan had seven blocks and junior Gissel Larios had 26 digs.

Elliot Christian 3, Millennium 0

Millennium’s volleyball team (4-13, 3-7 Central California Athletic Alliance) lost its latest match on Tuesday, Oct. 22, to Elliot Christian of Lodi.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-20, 25-21 in Elliot’s favor.

Junior Perrillen Zuniga made the third set close with a string of points from the service line, including two aces, and senior Madison Carroll also scored for the Falcons at the end.

Hughes Academy 3, Delta Charter 0

The Dragons (4-11, 3-10 Mountain Valley League) lost their latest match in Stockton to Hughes Academy, with set scores of 25-13, 25-7, 25-9.

It follows a 3-0 loss at home to Tioga on Oct. 17, where Tioga outscored Delta Charter 25-16, 25-17, 25-22.

Emma Richardson led the Dragons in that match wtih five aces. and Charilyn Merritt scored two aces and a kill.
