The Vikings (2-1) scored on the first possession of the game and had a 20-3 lead at the half as Vanden quarterback Jason Brisendine passed for 189 yards in the first half, including three touchdown passes.
West (0-4) struggled on offense at first, collecting only 70 yards in the first half, and the Wolf Pack had to carve out its own opportunities to make any progress. Kepa Saaga intercepted a pass to start a first-quarter offensive drive that included a 48-yard pass play from quarterback Bobby Landrum to Kenny Silva. The drive got West close enough for Jackson Nott to kick a 25-yard field goal.
Vanden’s Everardo Aguiar intercepted a Landrum pass at the start of the second half and ran it back 71 yards to put the Vikings up 27-3. West’s defense gave the Pack its offensive opportunties in the second half. D.J. Villasenor picked up a fumble to set up a 9-yard touchdown run for Saaga in the third quarter.
Amrit Singh also picked up a fumble for West, and the following drive resulted in Villasenor scoring on a 4-yard run. Nott make his second point-after kick of the night to cut Vanden’s lead to 27-17. Silva also snagged an interception and Cody Correia picked up a fumble to cut shot Viking drives, but Vanden scored once more in the fourth when Ren Littlepage got away for a 65-yard touchdown run.
“The second half our boys were very resilient,” West coach Matt Loggins said. “One guy made a play and another made a play and it started rolling.”
Loggins adding that he’s starting to see consistency in the Wolf Pack offense.
“Our backs ran hard tonight. They didn’t make any excuses and took the holes where they were at,” Loggins said.
West finished the night with 216 yards on offense, including 85 yards rushing.
“We just knew we had to go out there and fight,” junior fullback Kepa Saaga said. He ran the ball 20 times to grind out 34 yards, mostly right up the middle against a stubborn Vanden line.
“We looked good the first half but I feel like we could have done better,” Saaga said. “We need to come out with more intensity, so that we set the pace and set the tempo for the game.”
Landrum completed seven of 14 passes for 131 yards. Six of them went to Silva for 93 yards, and Hayden Ordone caught a 38-yard pass.
“We’ve got to go two times harder than this,” Silva said, adding that West can build on this win for next week when the Wolf Pack hosts the Bulldogs from Tracy High in the annual Crosstown Classic. “We can’t lose again and Tracy’s going to get it.”
Vanden won the sophomore game 19-0. West coach Robert Eccleston said the Wolf Pack defense held up well against a Viking team that is usually capable of scoring more. Daryn Higaki had 10 tackles and Austin Torma, Lenin Priego and Ryan Herrera has seven tackles each. It puts West at 0-3-1.
West’s freshmen (1-3) traveled to Lincoln High in Stockton on Thursday, with the Trojans winning it 41-6.
