Tracy real estate agents report an uptick in sales following last year’s downturn. The median price for a resale Tracy home jumped from $270,000 in February to $279,000 in April.

Starbucks Coffee has opened as the first business in the new Regency Center, the shopping center at the northeast corner of West 11th Street and Corral Hollow Road. Safeway and OSH are scheduled to follow.

Melissa Greiner and Megan Denton have been crowned Tracy North and South Junior Misses at the conclusion of the annual pageant. Both are West High School juniors.

Matt Pace of Boy Scout Troop 502 is painting the exterior of the old Lammersville School building in Clyde Bland Park as his Eagle Scout project.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory officials have reported that cleanup of toxic materials at Site 300 in Corral Hollow Canyon is moving forward on schedule.

25 years ago — 1987

James Loutzenhizer, former manager of the Owens-Illinois glass-container plant, has been appointed an O-I vice president. He is now West Coast regional manager.

Both the Tracy Angels and the Mi Ranchito Saints won their opening games in the Mexican American Baseball League. The Angels downed Modesto Gallo, 8-2, and the Saints bested the Oakdale Vaqueros, 9-3.

Services have been conducted for Rudy Santos, 43, a partner in Mi Ranchito Tortilleria.

Andrew Moore, a reporter for the Tracy Press during the past year, is leaving Tracy to join the staff of the Ontario Daily Report in Southern California.

A mini tornado ripped tiles off the roof of the home of Clarence Filippi on Loma Verde Drive in Centennial Estates.



50 years ago — 1962

W.E. “Brownie” Brown has been elected mayor by fellow members of the Tracy City Council. Manuel Pimentel was elected vice mayor.

James Baskette has been named valedictorian of Tracy High School’s Class of 1962. Jean Hardy is salutatorian.

Tracy police have arrested the prime suspect in the recent robbery and shooting at Johnnie’s Liquors.

Merrill West scored a hole-in-one on the third hole of the Tracy Golf & Country Club course during the club’s annual handicap tournament.

Linda Wade is winner of the college scholarship given by the Tracy Elementary Teachers Association.



75 years ago — 1937

City Councilman J. Frank Doughty fired back at those seeking to recall him. “Shall the City be run from a Sixth Street basement or honestly and openly from the City Hall?” he asked in his statement.

William Laswell, who twice served as Tracy’s chief of police, died while working at the Pacific Coast Aggregates gravel plant.

Grocer Frank Mastoris is building three new homes at the northeast corner of Ninth and A streets.

The newly reconstructed Banta Inn is having a grand opening. Free beer was served from 9 to 9:30 p.m. on opening night, reported Sammy Gallego, proprietor.



100 years ago — 1912

Abraham Grunauer, elected Tracy’s first mayor in 1910, has been elected by trustees (City Council members) to a second two-year term.

C.W. Goodwin was elected chief of the newly organized Tracy Volunteer Fire Department. Tom Eagan is assistant chief.

The city of Tracy has begun installing street signs for the first time.
