A slow-growth initiative has failed to qualify for the March ballot. Tracy Region Alliance for a Quality Community (TRAQC) fell some 200 signatures short of the minimum required.

Skateboarders of all abilities converged on the newly opened Tracy Skate Park in El Pescadero Park. Brandon Stevens said the new facility had been a dream of skateboarders for the past decade.

Katie Borncamp and Katie Tucker, both of Tracy, are putting in their final practice sessions at Oak Park Ice Rink in Stockton before competing in the Central Pacific Regional Figure Skating Competition in Salt Lake City.

Incumbents Rep. Norm Shumway, R-Stockton; state Sen. John Garamendi, D-Walnut Grove; and Assemblyman Pat Johnston, S-Stockton, all won re-election. Ronald Reagan was re-elected as the nation’s president.

Lincoln staged a second-half rally to take a 12-8 win over the Tracy High Bulldogs. Tracy junior wide receiver-defensive back Tim Brown caught seven passes for 60 yards and returned an interception 41 yards.

The City Council has allocated $30,090 to plan the expansion of Wadsworth Memorial Library. Friends of the Tracy Library are raising money to help pay for the expansion project.

Tom Dunkel, Harold Laubscher and John Nielsen, all with 30 years, topped service-award recipients at the Owens-Illinois glass-container plant.

50 years ago — 1959

Rod Lauren, who grew up as Roger Strunk in Tracy, is scheduled to appear on three Perry Como television shows, starting Nov. 18. He is being groomed as a singer by RCA Records.

Trustees of the Tracy Elementary School District are considering condemning the 22.5-acre parcel they say is needed to build the proposed El Portal Middle School (later renamed Monte Vista).

Candidates for queen of the 1959 Tracy High homecoming celebration are Elaine Paulson, Carol Simas and Jo Anna Brown.

San Francisco 49ers broadcaster Lon Simmons spoke at the weekly meeting of the Tracy Rotary Club. He served with Tracyite Bob Monagan in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.

City Councilman L.S. “Dick” Shipley, fire Chief Herb Herb Peters and Sam Matthews of the Tracy Press visited the Army Electronics Proving Ground at Fort Huachuca, Ariz.

75 years ago — 1934

Slicing sugar beets at the Tracy Holly Sugar Corp. continues at full steam as barges carry beets to the plant through Delta waterways. The fall “campaign” is scheduled to end Dec. 10.

A Merced man riding on a freight car fell off a half mile east of Tracy and was killed under the wheels of the train.

The Tracy High Bulldogs dumped the Manteca Buffaloes, 37-6. Howard Costello was a Tracy standout as halfback and on defense.

Former Sheriff William Riecks, a native of Tracy, lost his bid to unseat incumbent Sheriff Harvey Odell.

100 years ago — 1909

Martin Lammers, a pioneer farmer west of town and a one-time member of the California Assembly, has died after he and his wife were injured in a horse-and-buggy accident en route home from Stockton. The native of Hanover, Germany, was 78 years old.

The Southern Pacific is establishing the Stockton District as a subdivision of the Oakland-based Western Division. Trains leaving Tracy for Roseville and Fresno, and points in between, will be in the new district.
