The Tracy Post Office welcomed Jose “Joe” Tualla as its new postmaster during a swearing-in ceremony on Friday, May 3.

More than 50 people gathered in the post office sorting room, 125 W. Ninth St., to see Tualla take an oath to uphold certain values of the position.

“I’m honored to be the postmaster of Tracy — this is really overwhelming,” he said after the ceremony.

The 49-year-old had been working as the interim postmaster at the Tracy facility since September 2012. He joined the postal service in 1994, and said his goal has always been becoming a postmaster.

“I was actually in shock,” he said about the promotion. “It’s a great business we’re in that the post office still allows employees to come up the ranks and be all they can be.”

About 10 postmasters from other postal offices in the region were joined by employees at the Tracy site to watch Bobbi Riley, manager of post office operations, give the oath.

Riley said during the ceremony that she had several opportunities to promote Tualla, but chose someone else each time.

“He picked himself up and went into work the next day and gave his 150 percent and went on to try and achieve his goal,” she said. “Tracy became available and this was the right spot for him. He came to me and said, ‘Your right boss, this is where I belong,’”

Tualla oversees approximately 95 employees at the Tracy Post Office and its off-site annex facility.

“I’m excited, he’s a pretty nice guy,” said carrier Andrea Dominguez. “He gets it (mail) out timely; everybody works fast for him.”

The swearing-in master of ceremonies was former Tracy postmaster, Russ Stockton, who also worked with Tualla at the East Stockton facility.

“I’ve known Joe for 15 years and you could not meet a finer individual,” he said. “Tracy is a good office with good people and they work together. Tracy is in good hands with Joe.”
