The Tracy High volleyball team’s last home match showed potential, but the visiting Titans from Chavez High took over for the 3-0 win Monday in the Bulldogs’ last home game of the season.

Tracy and Chavez played close all the way through the first game, with Chavez having to win an extra point to take the advantage and the 26-24 win.

The Titans dominated the second game from the start, however, and finished with a 25-9 win.

The third game was a battle that ended 25-19 for the Titans.

The loss puts Tracy at 2-7 in the San Joaquin Athletic Association, with one more match on Wednesday at Lodi.

Head coach Mahina Tankersly said the team has showed steady progress through the year — as evidenced by the first game of Monday’s contest — and has given the other SJAA teams better competition in its second league go-around.

“If we had peaked earlier, we could have been more competitive with the other teams,” she said. “We’ll just try to keep our spirits up.”

Senior setter Stephanie Silva said the team’s progress during the season is most evident in team unity and support. The team’s disadvantage has been its small size, which leaves it vulnerable if a key player is out.

“We all knew going in we just had to work harder and hustle,” she said.

Senior middle hitter Erika Gasior said each game is a matter of realizing goals set in practice.

“We’ve been working on playing faster as a team, and that showed in the first game,” she said, adding that her teammates did well enough in the third game to show that they weren’t rattled by the score of the second game.

“We’ve been working on that all season, trying to keep our temperament cool,” she said. “Overall, we didn’t reach all of our goals, but tonight we did play hard. Hopefully, we’ll come out strong for Lodi.”

Tracy’s sophomores won their game 2-0, with scores of 25-15 and 25-17, and are now at 5-4 in the SJAA. Jenny Barwig scored eight aces, Haley Ochoa had six kills, Angela Mariani had four kills, Emily Anchartechahar had seven digs and Shannon Carey had 16 assists.

The Tracy freshmen (6-3 SJAA) also won 2-0. Alejandra Zaragoza scored three aces and a kill, Natalie Norman had two kills, and Alyssa Sheen, Tammy Serrato and Taylor Roach each had kills. Roach also had two blocks.

West 3, Stagg 0

West High’s volleyball team added a 3-0 win over Stagg High to its record Thursday in the team’s 11th league game of the season. The contest was played at Tokay High in Lodi to give the teams one more chance to improve their standing in the Sac-Joaquin Section power ratings.

West — in third place in the Tri-City Athletic League with a record of 6-5 (21-13 overall) — was 16th in the rankings as of two weeks ago and needed last week’s win to compensate for losses at Tokay and St. Mary’s.

The team still needs to see the revised power ratings to find out whether Thursday’s 3-0 win over Stagg will preserve West’s spot in the playoffs.

West won its match against Stagg with scores of 25-14, 25-15, 25-12, in spite of having a couple of key players out because of illness and an injury.

Ashleigh Paul led the team on offense with 14 kills and had eight digs. Charae McConnell had seven kills and two aces; Nani Nicanor had 20 assists and five digs; Tiana Franks had four kills, four blocks, three aces and four digs; Analisa Green had two aces, three kills and three blocks; Brianna Smith had 12 digs and was lauded for her accurate passes; Mary Pena had four aces and four digs; Nina Pritchett had two kills, three blocks and a diving dig; Monica Siu and Magali Sanchez each had one ace and two digs; and Brianna Estrada had several solid passes.
