The California Newspaper Publishers Association awarded the Tracy Press three trophies as part of its 2011 Better Newspapers Contest at a convention Saturday, May 5.

Photo Editor Glenn Moore won second place in the Weekly Division B — which includes papers with a weekly circulation of 11,001 to 25,000 — for best sports photography. Moore’s winning shot was of Tracy High’s Jasmin Guevara crashing through a fence in pursuit of a home run May 11, 2011.

Editor Jon Mendelson won first place for personal opinion columns in Weekly Division B, the second year in a row he has earned the first-place award in that category from the CNPA. The winning columns were titled “The public deserves more out of county redistricting,” which ran July 29, 2011, and “War memorial is a matter of honor,” which published Oct. 7, 2011.

He also took second place in the Weekly Division B investigative reporting category for a Jan. 21, 2011, article titled “A soldier’s story,” on the suicide of former Tracy resident Staff Sgt. David Senft, who U.S. Army investigators believe shot himself while he was deployed to Afghanistan.

The CNPA has protected the interests of newspapers around the state since 1888, and promotes the quality and economic health of California newspapers, according to its website.

Seriously? They must not be judging on things like grammar, spelling or content for these awards...!
