The track and field teams from West High were the big winners at the Jaguar Relays, held Saturday at Kimball High’s Don Nicholson Stadium.

Wolf Pack teams placed first in two of the four divisions, varsity girls and freshman-sophomore boys.

The West varsity girls scored 88 team points, ahead of second-place Bear Creek (74.5) and 11 other teams. The Kimball girls team (58) was fifth and Tracy (57.3) was sixth.

“We’ve been preparing for this meet,” said West sophomore Herbie Jo Dela Cruz, a member of West’s first-place varsity girls 4x100-meter relay team with senior Lia Burrell, and sophomores Alexis Lockard and Ivie Eboigbodin. The team logged a winning time of 50.92 seconds in the 4x100 and also won the 800-meter sprint medley relay (1:45.24).

“We were really nervous, but we were confident in what we have because we’ve been working really hard, and it just feels really good to win,” Dela Cruz said.

Eboigbodin also won the 300 hurdles (46.44), and West senior Elise Green won the high jump (4 feet, 10 inches).

Also winning their events were Tracy High sophomore Alicia Woo in the pole vault (9-7), and Tracy junior Kaitlin Spencer in the 3,200 meters (11:54.31).

Kimball High’s varsity boys were the second-place team (67) in their division, behind Livermore (116) and ahead of 11 other teams. Tracy (66) placed third and West (30) was seventh.

Kimball seniors Jodaan Johnson Brown and Brandon Soeung and juniors Mohammed Khan and Jhordin Mellion set a meet record with their win in the varsity boys 400-meter shuttle hurdle relay in 1:04.49. Bear Creek High set the previous record, 1:05.59, at last year’s meet.

Johnson Brown said that hosting the invitational meet inspired him and his teammates.

“We had a good week of practice and it’s definitely showing out on the track today,” he said. “We’re looking to improve each and every day to get better and better until the end of the season.”

Members of the record-setting relay team swept the top three spots in the individual 300 hurdles, with Soeung first (40.98), Johnson Brown second (41.51) and Khan third (42.19).

Tracy’s team of Eric Hawkins and Grant Kuczma, both seniors, and Jason Nelson and Nate Jones, juniors, won the 4x100 relay (44.55), and Jones won the 100-meter dash (10.94), one-hundredth of a second ahead of Kimball’s Jackson (10.95).

West’s freshman sophomore boys scored 171 team points, well ahead of second-place Tracy (96), third-place Kimball (90) and eight other teams.

Leading the West freshman-sophomore boys was the 4x100 relay team of Christian Velasco, Justin Velasco, Dion Collier and Matthew Roe, all sophomores, who set a meet record with their 45.33-second win. Atwater High held the old record, 46.52, set in 2012.

The same team won the 4x400 relay (3:48.16), and the team of Roe, Collier, freshman Emmanuel Turner and sophomore Marcel Dancy won the 800 sprint medley relay (1:41.90).

West coach T.J. Williams said it was the third weekend in a row that the West frosh-soph boys had won all three sprint relays, including victories at the Marsh Creek Invitational on March 15 at Heritage High School in Brentwood and the East Bay Invitational on March 8 at California High School in San Ramon.

Four West freshman-sophomore athletes also set individual meet records: Collier won the 100 in 11.42 (old record 11.66, 2012); Roe won the long jump in 21-3.5 (old record 18-5.75, 2012); Christian Velasco won the triple jump in 41-0.5 (old record 39-2, 2013); and sophomore Anthony Rhoads won the high jump in 5-8 (old record 5-4, 2012). Tracy High sophomore Haiden Hall set a meet record in the discus, 127-1, beating the 2012 record of 117-8.

Tracy’s team of Jacob Spencer and Sammy Wong, sophomores, and Morgan Harrison and Hector Olmedo, freshmen, won the 4,000-meter distance medley relay (12:01.27) and Spencer won the 3,200 (10:37.29). Kimball’s team of freshmen Dominic Caraballo, K.J. Moody, Nemat Waseem and Lionel Orhiere won the boys 4x800 relay.

West’s freshman-sophomore girls were the second-place team in their division (103) behind Tulare West (107) and ahead of nine other teams. Tracy (32.3) was seventh and Kimball (30) was eighth.

West’s 4x100 shuttle hurdle relay team of sophomore Tatyana Nealy and freshmen Zaria Ealy, Danielle Hopkins and Nina Ross won their event (1:26.16). Sophomore Julia Flohr won the 3,200 (12:55.94), and freshman Morgan Brown won the long jump (14-7).

The Jaguar Relays is in its third year. Organizer Ben Trombley, Kimball’s head track and field coach, said that the 14 participating teams were a few less than in 2013, but the competition was the best yet.

“The quality improves each year,” Trombley said, adding that he had expected to see many new meet records.

Among 60 events, 15 for each division, athletes set 26 meet records: eight in the varsity boys, four in the varsity girls and seven each in the freshman-sophomore boys and girls divisions.
