He and his wife moved to Castle Rock, Colo., in 2004, and he had been living at Castle Rock Care Center.
Mr. Alvarez was born July 5, 1926, in Los Angeles and moved to Tracy with his family as a child. He attended Tracy Joint Union High School.
He joined the U.S. Marine Corps at age 17 and served in the Philippines and fought in the battle of Iwo Jima, receiving a Purple Heart for injuries during the battle.
After the war, he returned to Tracy, where he married and worked as a supervisor at Tracy Defense Depot until retirement.
Mr. Alvarez was an active parishioner of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and a former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus.
He helped start a sports program at St. Bernard’s Catholic School and was involved with sports in the greater Tracy community.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Nola Alvarez of Castle Rock; a son, Paul Alvarez, and his wife, Brenda, of Woodland Park, Colo.; two daughters, Stephanie Alvarez of Denver and Patricia Mellin, and her husband, Jim, of Larkspur, Colo.; a grandson; and four great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are three sisters, Ramona Velarde of Stockton, Connie Howard of Tracy and Rosalie Menchaca of Anaheim; and two brothers, Salvador Grandinetti of Sacramento and Larry Grandinetti of Tracy.
Preceding him in death were a brother, Joe Grandinetti; three sisters, Linda Moreno, Maryanne Rodriguez and Jean Blain; and a granddaughter.
A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Nov. 15 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 163 W. Eaton Ave., followed by burial in Tracy cemetery, 501 E. Schulte Road. A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Nov. 14 at Fry Memorial Chapel, 550 S. Central Ave.
