Tracy’s softball fields will host 70 teams next week, all competing for two Amateur Softball Association national titles.
The ASA has 54 12-and-under teams and 16 10-and-under teams signed up for the Western National Championships.
The Tracy Sports Complex on West 11th Street will be the main location for the tournament, but city of Tracy recreation supervisor Floyd Lewis said that the response for the tournament exceeded his expectations, forcing the city to include Stockton’s Arnaiz Fields and West High’s fields as additional venues.
Most of the teams come from Northern California, but there are also teams from New Mexico, Hawaii, Arizona, Washington and Southern California. Local teams include the 12-and-under Tracy Titans and the All-American Sports Academy 10-and-under team.
Play begins Wednesday, when all teams will play two games to decide seeding for the double-elimination bracket. Bracket play starts Thursday, and the championship games will be Aug. 2.
Lewis said he was able to bring ASA to Tracy through his involvement with the group — he has previously organized ASA championship tournaments in Sacramento.
“I’ve been involved with the sport for a long time,” he said. “I realized what an opportunity it would be for the city.”
But the opportunity wasn’t free.
The city had to bid to bring the tournament to town, and Lewis said the city will pay about $7,800 to host the event. He said, however, that the city recovers the bid money through tournament fees, admission fees and souvenir sales, though he added it isn’t a profitable venture in and of itself.
“It should cover most of our expenses and provide revenue for maintenance of the fields and some of the (parks and community services) department’s overhead,” he said. “Ultimately, in the end the city will just about break even.”
The real benefit for Tracy, he said, is about $1.5 million in revenue for local businesses as hundreds of families from out of town who book hotel rooms and eat at local restaurants.
He said it’s also a chance for the city to show off Tracy Sports Complex’s four lighted fields as a tournament-style venue.
The complex would have been sufficient for the 45 or so teams originally expected at the five-day tournament, but with 70 teams signed up, the city needed another place to play, prompting the outreach to Stockton’s Arnaiz Fields. That park has four lighted fields, including a stadium-style field.
Games also will be played at West High’s varsity and junior varsity softball fields.
