The unanimous vote of 7-0 enabled school officials to seek a request for proposals from four contractors to renovate the Emma Baumgardner Theater and Ag Science buildings, according to Bonny Carter, TUSD director of facilities and planning.
The four companies competing for the project are Acme Construction, Broward Builders, Landmark Construction and Roebbelen Contracting.
The four companies were compiled from a group of six companies who participated in a request for qualifications authorized by the trustees on May 14.
The objective was to compile a pool of contractors that the district may utilize on future projects, Carter said. This process was used in the past for projects at Kimball High, West High, Monte Vista and McKinley schools.
Carter said the three companies will provide the district with the maximum cost, list of subcontractors they plan to use, and their qualifications. She said based on that information, district officials will pick a company to perform the final two renovations.
This phase of the process is expected to take five to six weeks to complete.
“Definitely not a fast process,” she said.
Carter said they hope to begin renovations during the Christmas break, but it will more likely be at the beginning of January.
In the Ag building, she said they plan to modernize the three interior classrooms and upgrade the infrastructure, while inside the theater they plan to modernize the two interior classrooms and bring the entire building up to compliance for the Americans with Disabilities Act code.
After the two buildings are complete, Carter said the district will have “touched every classroom” on campus after eight months of renovations at a cost of approximately $75 million.
Funding all of the projects were monies from Measure E and S bond funds, state school facilities funding, developer/mitigation fees, redevelopment funds, general funds and deferred maintenance money.
“I’m tremendously excited,” Carter said. “What an opportunity with this economic climate, and we were able to find state funding and various funding sources. To renovate the entire campus is really beyond our wildest dreams.”
The trustees voted without discussion on the topic.
