DETAILS: West High will host an athletic orientation for all incoming freshmen for the 2012-13 school year. Coaches from all of the Wolf Pack athletic programs will be on hand to take sign ups, provide summer practice information, and answer any questions. Counselors will also be available to help with class registration and to provide new information on the NCAA academic entrance standards.

Bowling karaoke contest

DETAILS: The eighth international Bowling Karaoke Contest continues with weekly sing-offs. Singers compete for a chance to make the local finals, and winners go to the finals in the Eldorado Showroom at the Bowl Expo in Reno in June, with contest organizers picking up the cost of hotel and airfare.

CPOA memorial run

DETAILS: The 4th Annual California Peace Officers Association’s Memorial Run and Family Barbecue honors officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, and supports the families they’ve left behind through Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.), California Chapter. The run includes 10K and 5K races, plus a 1-mile run for kids 12 and under. The 10K race starts at 8:20 a.m., the 5K at 9 a.m. and the kids run at 10:15 a.m. Entry fees include a barbecue catered by Outback Steakhouse, which will be begin at 11 a.m. along with the awards ceremony.
COST: $40, with a $5 discount for those who register before May 8. Registration for the kids’ fun run is $20. Tickets for the barbecue alone are $12, and $7 for kids 12 and under.

Charity mud run
WHEN: 7:30 a.m., Saturday, June 16
WHERE: Eagal Lakes Resort, 12 W. Lorenzen Rd.
DETAILS: Recon Run is a 5k boot camp style adventure-obstacle-mud run designed for families, athletes, running groups, police, fire, and teachers. Proceeds will support Modesto Junior College track and field and cross country teams, Military Moms of Tracy and The Semper Fi Fund, which supports injured and critically ill members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families. Organizers expect more than 4,000 participants and 2,000 spectators. Multiple waves of runners will take on the course in 15-minute intervals starting at 8:45. Check-in is at 7:30 a.m. There will also be a free 400-meter obstacle course for kids under 13 from 10 a.m. to noon.
COST: $65, $60 per-person for teams, $55 for military with ID and Eagal Lakes members. There is a $10 per-person discount for those who register before April 15.
