With one snip from a pair of oversized scissors this morning, a new chapter in downtown Tracy opened.

“It’s a good day for Tracy and a great place to be,” said Mayor Brent Ives, prior to cutting the ceremonial ribbon officially opening the Downtown Plaza at Sixth Street and Central Avenue.

The $3.8 million plaza project, which broke ground Aug. 1 and was paid for by the city’s now-defunct redevelopment agency, features several green spaces and an interactive water feature that shoots several streams of water into the air. LED light strands with the capability of cycling through different colors are strung across the plaza and will illuminate the area at night.

City officials hope to use the plaza as a central gathering point for residents, and have planned several community events on the grounds. That includes the opening event of the Downtown Block Party series Friday, May 4, at 6 p.m., a Cinco de Mayo celebration featuring mariachis and a Latin salsa band.

Cars are once again parking in front of the businesses that line Sixth Street east of Central Avenue, as the lot was finished and opened in late March. The businesses have the option of closing some of that parking space to create sidewalk dining areas.

Janet Deloushe, and her daughter Lindsey, were enjoying the water feature shortly after the ceremonies ended.

“I get hot, but the water is cold,” said the 6-year-old.

Deloushe said she liked having a common area in downtown and that she was already planning the pair’s next visit.

“It’s great, because now when we come downtown, it’s easy to just come over here and get some sun and cool off under the water,” she said. “It’s a great idea that they decided to build this.”

The following is a list of events for the Downtown Block Party series:

• May 11, 6 to 10 p.m.; Girl’s Night Out! Pink Party “It’s Derby Time;” $20 per ticket

• June 8, 6 to 9 p.m.; Downtown Block Party; Blues and Brews

• July 13, 6:30 p.m.; Movie on the Downtown Plaza; “Smurfs”

I love going to small downtowns and seeing what they offer. Whether you agree or not I think it is a beautiful part of renovating downtown.

I'm tired of going to other cities and enjoying their downtowns. We need more of this and more shops, places to eat and when that happens the riff raff will be pushed out!

This is good and all but a complete waste of taxpayer money. I guess this was built to complement the other close by waste called the transit station. I guess we didn't need to increase are sales tax to pay for police and fire because we seem to have money for wasted projects like this one. I wonder what the overall cost of this project truly will be once you figure the maint. on the pumps and the vandalism that will surely occur. We truly need to get rid of this current city council, surely there must be better folks out there.

It's comments like these that give outsiders the idea that the City of Tracy is composed of a bunch of oak-balls. For those of you that have been back East, or in Europe, where plazas and town squares are prevalent, I am sure you'll appreciate the new city plaza. If we are not going to undertake public works to enhance and beautify our City for fear of vandalism, then the dirt-bags and gang-bangers will have won. Finally walking tall, the money used to build the Plaza (and the Transit Station) did not come out of the general fund, which is what is used to pay for fire, police and other services. So next time, please get your facts straight before making such broad, blanket statements.

Thanks to the city for providing yet another overpriced space for gangsters to practice their graffiti! So glad we have such forward-thinking leadership in our city. What useless thing can we spend money on now since there is no economic recession or anything...?
