Born Feb. 22, 1914, Mrs. Starkey was raised in Berkeley and graduated from University of California, Berkeley. She played cello as a member of a trio and with the Oakland Symphony. She also worked several years as an accountant and bookkeeper before moving to Tracy, where her husband was a purchasing agent for H.J. Heinz Co. and an active member of the Kiwanis Club.
Until June, she lived in the home she had shared with her husband beginning in the 1960s.
Survivors include four second cousins, Joan Stapleton of San Jose, Joyce Silveira of Hunters Valley, Marvin Gerdts, and his wife, Janice, of Sanger and Marilyn Baker of Sturgis, S.D., the grandchildren of Mrs. Starkey’s aunt, Mayme Snyder Hart; and neighbor Lina Longmire of Tracy.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 55 years, L.D. “Tut” Starkey; and her parents, Thomas Henry and Gertrude Arminda Snyder Staples.
