Police are still investigating the shooting death of Neil Vandergriff, which was reported as a suicide in the Tracy police blotter Aug. 1.

A woman screaming for help called police at 11:22 p.m., police records show, saying that a man just shot himself in the head in the home he rented on the 1400 block of Coolidge Street.

Two days later, the 48-year-old died at San Joaquin General Hospital in Stockton.

Vandergriff, a carpenter by trade, was a divorced father of two who graduated from Tracy High School.

The police log hints at an arrest, as it stated someone at the scene "will be booked" for mental health issues. Detectives were called in shortly after, though investigators refuse to discuss the case, and the cryptic entry provided few other clues about what happened that night.

Vandergriff’s family declined to discuss his death.
