Press staff report

West High’s volleyball team has started its season with three wins in a row, including a 3-0 win on Wednesday, Sept. 4, against visiting Grace Davis High of Modesto.

West beat Davis with scores of 25-5, 25-19, 25-15. Senior Megan Toon led the Wolf Pack with 10 kills, fellow senior Merinesa Saaga logged six kills and junior Gissel Larios scored three aces.

The win followed West’s 3-2 victory in a Sac-Joaquin Section Foundation game on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Manteca High. Foundation games, played at the start of each season, raise money for the section’s scholar-athlete scholarships but don’t count on teams’ win-loss records. West came back after losing two sets, winning three in a row to beat Manteca with scores of 20-25, 16-25, 25-16, 25-21, 17-15.

West opened its season with a 3-1 victory at Turlock High on Friday, Aug. 30. The Wolf Pack won the match with set scores of 25-21, 26-28, 25-18, 25-20. Saaga led the winning team with 16 kills and six digs, and Larios had 10 digs and 26 assists. Junior Kate Bell led the team in serve receptions, and sophomore Sarah Weaver had 11 digs.

The Jaguars beat the Falcons with scores of 25-23, 25-13, 25-7 in their SJS Foundation game on Tuesday at Kimball High.

Kimball senior Samantha Sanders scored 10 aces, and junior Haley Shuey and senior Iris Nelson scored 11 kills each. Sarah Nunes, a junior, had 20 assists.

Statistics for the Falcon team were not available.

Kimball also logged a 3-0 win Friday at Franklin High in Stockton, with set scores of 25-13, 25-10, 25-7.

Venture Academy 3, Delta Charter 0

The Dragons lost their SJS Foundation game 3-0 on Tuesday to visiting Venture Academy. Sophomore Cheyenne Bearfoot scored three aces for the Dragons, and sophomore Katlin Good and junior Samantha Lillak scored two aces each.

SOCCER

St. Mary’s 2, Tracy 1

The Bulldogs kept up the pressure on the St. Mary’s goal throughout their first game of the season Wednesday, Sept. 4, at home, but the Rams broke through for a late goal in the 65th minute to break a 1-1 tie and take the win.

St. Mary’s scored first in the seventh minute, and Tracy junior Angelo Alejandre scored the Bulldogs’ lone goal in the ninth minute on an assist from senior Jacob Gonzalez.

Kimball 2, Stagg 1

The Jaguar boys won their first home game of the season Tuesday on a late goal.

With the game tied at 1-1, the referee gave Kimball possession of the ball in the 76th minute right in front of the Stagg goal, after the Delta Kings’ goalie illegally picked up a pass from a teammate. Kimball senior Alberto Flores passed to junior Brian Donovan, who made the shot.

Flores also provided the assist on a goal in the first half, delivering the ball to junior Ryan Chaney, who was open on the right side and took the ball in to score from 10 yards out.

Kimball opened the season with four losses at the Pitman Pride Cup Tournament in Turlock on Friday, Aug. 30, and Saturday, Aug. 31. The Jaguars lost 5-0 to Gale, 3-1 to Ceres, 3-0 to Golden Valley and 5-1 to Turlock.

West 1, Lodi 1

West High opened the boys soccer season on the road Friday at Lodi. After a scoreless first half, Lodi took a 1-0 lead. A goal by sophomore Ahmad Samady tied it up for West.

Venture Academy 7, Millennium 0

The Falcon soccer team went to Venture Academy in Stockton on Friday to open the season with a defeat.

Millennium put up offensive pressure through the game, taking 18 shots, including five each by senior Daniel Gutierrez and junior Ramiro Cortez, but remained scoreless.
