Tracy Police Department Capt. Jeremy Watney said Monday, Sept. 24, that police were contacted by someone from Tracy Unified School District on Friday to report a rumor that the crosstown football game at West High could be the site of a “retaliation for a shooting in county jurisdiction.”
In response, the mobile command unit and additional officers were stationed at Steve Lopez Stadium, Watney said.
“That was the rumor going around schools the day of the football game,” Watney said. “(We were) reacting to that.”
The shooting to which Watney referred happened at a party Sept. 8 on the 11700 block of Larch Road. Three people were injured, and as of 4 p.m. Monday no one had been arrested in connection with the incident.
Tracy Unified School District spokeswoman Jessica Cardoza confirmed a TUSD employee called police Friday after overhearing a student talking. Cardoza wouldn’t say at which school the rumor was overheard.
“No threat made — they overheard a rumor from a student,” Cardoza said. “They said something might happen at the football game.”
Watney said the football game took place without incident, and no arrests were made relating to the rumor.
School resource officers are looking into the rumor, Watney said.
During the Larch Road shooting, which is under investigation by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department, three men were shot after a group of party crashers was allegedly told to leave and returned. Reports from the sheriff’s department allege at least one party crasher was responsible for the shooting.
Two of the victims, ages 18 and 19, sustained minor gunshot wounds, while an 18-year-old man was seriously injured when he was shot in the stomach, deputies said the week after the incident.
Sheriff's officials were not immediately available for comment.
