The March Madness Mega Adoption Fair took place Saturday at West Valley Mall and included rescued animals from Animal Rescue of Tracy, No Place Like Home Animal Rescue, East of Eden, People for Pets, Noah’s Ark Foundation of Tracy, Amazing Greys Retired Racers and Mountain House Feral Cat Rescue. The event was organized by Ron and Cathy Silva from Animal Rescue of Tracy.
“I came up with the idea to do this while planning the annual pet expo event, also held at the mall,” Cathy Silva said. “We are hoping for not only adoptions from this event, but also educating the public that adopting through a rescue group is much better than a breeder.”
She said the adoption fair may become a semiannual tradition, repeating each spring and fall.
Hundreds of people showed up to see the animals between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. According to Donna Harris, founder of No Place Like Home, two animals were adopted from her organization within the first 30 minutes.
“This is exciting,” Harris said. “We’ve already had two dogs adopted this morning. We are hoping to do this again later this year.”
Luis Rodriguez adopted one of the dogs, an 8-week-old cocker spaniel-dachshund mix named Ana.
“We came here today to give a dog a home,” Rodriguez said. “My wife and daughter fell in love with this puppy, and so we adopted her.”
Susan Aceves, founder of Amazing Greys Retired Racers, had close to a dozen greyhounds at the event. The dogs came to the rescue group from Arizona, Texas, Colorado, Florida and other states.
“Our rescue helps find homes for these racing dogs that have never had a home,” Aceves said. “These dogs give back 100 percent or more then I give them. Greyhounds are wonderful dogs.”
Jackie Dekker, founder of Mountain House Feral Cat Rescue, wanted to teach the community about the importance of spaying or neutering pets.
“Our program helps Mountain House residents and the feral cat population by providing a trap, neuter and return service,” Dekker said.
The West High School Key Club also gave out information on spay and neuter programs and pit bull awareness and provided free face painting for children.
