The renewal of the Bean Run turned out to be more popular than organizers expected.

Tracy Chamber of Commerce President Chad Wood, also a runner in Saturday morning’s 5K race, said the Chamber planned for about 220 runners and ended up with about 350.

Race organizer Steve Jimerson, a volunteer with the Chamber, acknowledged afterward that it wasn’t too much of a surprise.

“The city doesn’t really have a run, so this is a great way to get everybody out together,” he said, adding that he was encouraged to get the event going again because the former Bean Runs helped give the festival its family-friendly atmosphere.

Sure enough, the finish line next to Tracy City Hall had people cheering on children and grandparents alike as they crossed the finish line for the 5K and 10K races.

“I like that it’s linked to the festival. I think that draws more people,” Betty Topping, 40, of Tracy said. She came in first place in the women’s 5K race with a time of 20:02.

“I thought they were caught off guard by as many people that came, but I think Tracy needs more of these events. It’s a good thing for families to come out and do together. They need to add a kids’ fun run.”

Topping ran the race because she’s training for the New York Marathon in November. Others signed up because they look for a few events every year for competition, and this weekend they had one right at home.

Marika Kouda of Tracy, competing in the 35-39 age division, finished first overall in the women’s 10K with a time of 45:57. She said the course, from 11th Street to Tracy Boulevard and back to City Hall by way of Fourth Street, Central Avenue and Sixth Street, compares well with other courses and her routes for daily workouts.

“It felt great because it was not windy, which is very unusual for Tracy. It was a great race,” she said.

Among the young runners, members of Tracy High’s varsity cross-country team came out to compete.

“That’s my favorite course so far,” Kyle Petrucelli, 17, said. “It was really fast with lots of shade. It made for a good run.”

He added that his time, 18:22, is his best yet for a 5K race, the standard distance for high school competition, and it was also good enough for second place overall. Petrucelli had three teammates with him, Ryan Black, Akash Singh and Tyler Martin, and signed up to compete as soon as they knew there would be a local race.

Overall winner of the 5K race was Robert Noakes, 25, of Fremont, who finished with a time of 17:45. He said he likes to run, but only occasionally does he run competitively.

“Every now and then I’ll do a 5K. I’m pretty happy with my time, because I haven’t run a 5K in a long time. I was hoping just for anything under 18 (minutes).”

He brought Wendy Lao, 23, of San Jose as she gets into racing. She finished second in the 5K women’s division with a time of 21:18.

“We’re training for a half-marathon, so this is good training,” she said, adding that it’s her first 5K race. “I just did sports like basketball and volleyball and didn’t really become a runner until I got into grad school. All my friends started running so I decided to run.”

Overall winner of the 10K race was Noah Morrison, 30, of Walnut Creek, with a time of 36:43. He’s also building up to bigger events, including the Rock ‘N Roll San Jose Half Marathon, after he started training in December.

“This was the only 10K race I could find in the Bay Area that was exactly three weeks before,” he said. “It was very fast and flat and that’s what I like.”

After he found out about the race through On Your Mark Events it gave him a reason to visit Tracy.

“I’ve started to get back into running and started to look online at different places that list a lot of runs. This looked like a good one to do. I’ve never been to the Bean Festival, so I’m really looking forward to seeing it.”
