The Seventh-day Adventist Church will have its annual spring yard sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday at 2025 Holly Drive.

Freiler School’s Chess Club will host a youth chess tournament at 6:15 p.m. Friday at the school, 2421 W. Lowell Ave. Registration, for $10, runs from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. All kids through high school age can play, and chess sets will be provided. This is not an elimination tournament, and everyone who plays will receive a trophy.

The Punjab Culture Club in Tracy will host the first local Vaisakhi Mela, a religious and cultural celebration that hails from Northern India, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Lincoln Park, East Street and Eaton Avenue. The celebration is free, and there will be booths with Indian food, clothes and jewelry, along with a dance competition and other performances.

The Great Valley Writing Project at California State University, Stanislaus, in partnership with the Lammersville Elementary School District, is sponsoring a two-week youth writing program from 9 a.m. to noon June 7 through 18 at Wicklund Elementary School, 300 E Legacy Drive, in Mountain House, for Tracy-area students entering fourth through eighth grades.
There is a $200 registration fee, which will cover all class materials, a T-shirt and an anthology of participants’ writing.

Give Every Child a Chance, a Tracy tutoring group, will offer summer sessions from June 21 to July 29 for students who receive below-passing grades on their final report cards for 2009-10. Those who complete the summer session will have priority for placement in the September tutoring session.
