Twelve wrestlers from Tracy High and eight from West High will go after division titles this weekend, with a shot at the Sac-Joaquin Section championship tournament next week at the University of the Pacific.

Tracy High coach Darryl Rond said his wrestlers, who claimed eight tournament wins in Saturday’s San Joaquin Athletic Association meet at Lincoln High, will face their toughest competition yet Friday and Saturday at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I South tournament at McNair High School in Stockton.

Rond says he expects the wrestlers from the Central California Conference and Modesto Metro Conference will be favored going into the meet. Wrestlers from the Tri-City Athletic League, which includes West High, will also compete at McNair High on Friday and Saturday.

West wrestlers ended up in fourth place in the Tri-City Athletic League tournament on Saturday at West. Wrestlers from McNair High School of Stockton ended up with the top point total in the TCAL tournament. Second-place Edison had 209 points and third-place Tokay had 206 points. West wrestlers collected 159.5 points.

Among the top Tracy High wrestlers is senior Blair Bergmann, who on Saturday was named the SJAA’s Outstanding Wrestler for 2008 in the 171-pound weight class. Bergmann lost only two matches all year and went undefeated in SJAA league matches.

Bergmann won first place for his weight class Saturday, as did Tracy wrestlers Josh Mandeville (112 pounds), Chase Nicholson (119), Josh Tristan (125), Jacob Beaman (140), Drew Nicholson (145), Dylan Smith (152) and Andrew Nunes (160).

They all will be in Saturday’s matches, as will Cameron Henle (103), Marc Chapple (189), Chad Fraga (215) and Zack Rodriguez (285).

Rond also gained recognition at Saturday’s meet at Lincoln when he was named the SJAA’s Wrestling Coach of the Year.

Wrestlers from West High will include freshman Justin Del Campo, who took first place in the 103-pound class. Those who made it to the final rounds in the TCAL meet but ended up in second place include Hesham Abdo (130), Ed Pricola (140) and Alvaro Tellez (189). Other West wrestlers going to Saturday’s meet are Trevor Manois (112), Taylor Post (119), Sal Alvarado (125) and Kris Merrill (285).
