Mo Kahoonei has wanted to start a youth football program in Mountain House for several years, but he just recently found enough support and interest from the community to form the Hurricanes.

The program — which as of last week had nine coaches and 50 players for the junior novice, novice and junior varsity levels — will enter the Trans Valley Youth Football League for the 2012 fall season. It will likely be another year before the group has enough players to fill a varsity roster.

“A lot of kids were turned away by Tracy, so that made me get to a position where we had to create something for our own kids,” Kahoonei said. “When Tracy has such high numbers, they’re going to take their own kids first. This year wasn’t too bad, but the year before that, our kids were being turned away.”

Kahoonei said the program has “great support” from Lammersville Unified School District Superintendent Dale Hansen, who has helped make Questa School available for the Hurricanes’ practices and home games.

“We didn’t have a football field, because Tracy turned us away,” he said. “We were stuck out there in search of a field.”

In addition to the school district, the program has support from Shea Homes.

The Hurricanes have also formed a board of directors, which includes President Jeff Grondz, Vice President Danielle Shelbourne and Treasurer Monika Kahoonei.

Mo Kahoonei said the board’s goal in the first year is to establish the Hurricanes as a community group to make all of Mountain House proud.

“We’re trying to teach (players and cheerleaders) not just the game of football, but also how to be gentlemen and young ladies representing the organization and representing our community,” he said.

Kahoonei said winning games and championships should follow once the children buy into the value of hard work, teamwork, integrity, discipline and focus — qualities the Hurricanes leaders hope to instill in players.

“We’re more concerned about creating a positive environment for our children and our community,” he said.

Congrats Mo and the "team" from MH. Good to see that your dream has come true and the residents are in full support. Can't wait to start seeing the Hurricanes winning games!!
