Merchants are hoping to draw more shoppers downtown this holiday season with the iShop Tracy Downtown program, which is offering high-end electronics as prizes to prolific consumers.

Residents should save their receipts on taxable purchases made at the 50 participating businesses between Friday, Nov. 29, and Dec. 31, said Tracy City Center Association President Dino Margaros, whose group organized the program with the city of Tracy.

The top spenders are eligible for one of three prizes — an iPad Air, an iPad Mini and a $100 iTunes gift card.

“It’s a small way to focus the Christmas shopping to keep it local,” Margaros said. “It minimizes the leakage going to online purchase or purchases outside the city.”

The program was conducted citywide in 2012, but event coordinators wanted to focus their efforts this year on the downtown area.

“It’s about keeping it local and helping your local retailer,” Margaros said. “I think it reminds people that when they shop locally, more of their tax dollars will help their community. It benefits us all.”

Among the participating merchants are Elaines’ Boutique, at 31 E. Sixth St., owned by Elaine Bogetti and Elaine Pombo, and Liz Garcia’s consignment shop, My Best Friend’s Closet, at 821 N. Central Ave.

“We enjoy being a part of anything the city puts together,” Bogetti said, standing inside her clothing shop. “The downtown is more small businesses to me, and it (the program) helps the small businesses. If we all work together, it makes the downtown nicer.”

Garcia is making sure all her customers know about iShop Tracy Downtown by including information with each purchase. She has also posted the details on her store’s Facebook page.

“We want everybody to succeed,” she said. “If we succeed, others will succeed. Hopefully, it will attract other new businesses.”

Residents age 18 and older can register for iShop Tracy Downtown at the city of Tracy Development Services Department, 333 Civic Center Plaza, during office hours beginning Jan. 6. The deadline to complete an entry form and submit original purchase receipts is 5 p.m. Jan. 10.
