The man, whose identity was not disclosed by California Highway Patrol, was driving north on Tracy Boulevard north of Old River and south of the Grant Line Canal around 2 p.m. when his SUV went off the roadway and flipped, said CHP officer Justin Miller. The car landed upside-down in the water.
“He got pitched sideways and then (rolled) end over end,” Miller said.
Police were notified of the crash when a nearby farmer heard the accident and called authorities, Miller said.
Tracy firefighters jumped into the ditch and used the Jaws of Life to cut the man out of the vehicle. When rescuers got the man onto the shoulder of the roadway, he appeared to be unconscious.
“I hope he makes it,” said one firefighter. “He was talking in the car. He said he has five kids.”
The man was taken by ambulance to San Joaquin County Hospital. His condition was unknown.
Inside the car was a child’s car seat, and Tracy Fire Department Division Chief Steve Hanlon said firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to check the water for any more passengers.
No other passengers were found, Hanlon said, and the man’s children were accounted for when authorities reportedly notified his family.
