Both the West and Tracy High tennis teams ended their seasons with losses Monday in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I team playoffs.
WestWest hosted Laguna Creek High School of Elk Grove, the second-ranked team from the Delta Valley Conference. While West won four of the six singles matches, Laguna Creek swept the doubles matches for the 5-4 win.
West coach Ben Tsukiji said that one of his usual doubles players was out sick, but he was happy with the way his team performed.
“Everyone moved up and made a good showing,” he said, adding that making playoffs after taking a co-league championship with St. Mary’s for the second year in a row was a big accomplishment for a relatively young team. The team had only three seniors this year, including Jasmin Fonseca, Deanna Saavedra and Jessica Dabandon.
“This co-championship really belongs to this set of girls, because we didn’t have many returning players,” he said. “This group did it with new players who worked hard and achieved something special.”
West’s winners were: Emma Bell beat Caroline Huang 6-1, 6-1; Regina Pacheco beat Karemela Pagdilao 6-3, 6-2; Ashley Vergel de Dios beat Mary Ngo 6-2, 6-4; Angie Juan beat Jamie Santos 6-0, 7-5.
Singles wins for Laguna Creek include: Tiffany Pham, the DVC’s singles individual champion, beat Jasmin Fonseca 6-0, 6-0; Kristen Yee beat Tiful Koul 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.
Doubles wins for Laguna Creek were: Mallory Mellizza and Mimi Tam beat Deanna Saavedra and Ebele Obi 6-1, 6-2; Amber Kuan and Hannah Chan beat Allison Pokorny and Shannel Hawkins 6-2, 6-3; and Katheryne Wong and Yu Chinen beat Jessica Anastasio and Glenmae Tolentino 6-2, 6-4.
TracyTracy’s season-long winning streak ended Monday when visiting Pleasant Grove High, the No. 2 team from the Delta River Conference, took a 7-2 win. Tracy won two of three doubles matches, while Pleasant Grove swept all of the singles matches.
Tracy’s doubles teams of Paige Noonan and Madeline Geibig won their match against Carisse Platt and Nardos Girma 7-5, 6-2, and Tracy’s Paige Johnson and Kelsey Blanc beat Hattie Mouzes and Beti Girma 6-2, 1-6, 10-7, with the last set a tiebreaker.
Noonan and Geibig said that they had to play aggressive to take the win.
“We had to play every point like we were losing, so we had the mind to keep playing harder and harder,” Noonan said.
Tracy’s other doubles team of Johnson and Blanc faced strong competition but relied on persistence to get through.
“We knew we could take a tiebreaker because we had done it before,” Blanc said, adding that she reached one of her personal goals of going undefeated as an individual in her senior year.
Wins for the Pleasant Grove team were: Hailee Sutton beat Renata Guzman 6-1, 6-1; Taylor Osborne beat Michelle Kouda 7-5, 6-2; Shelby Zehnder beat Chiara Adamo 6-4, 6-4; Stephanie Ramos beat Aubrey Boehm 6-1, 6-0; Baylee Jacobs beat Rebecca Reinen 6-2, 6-1; and Andie Mouzes beat Manjot Bagri 6-0, 6-3.
In the doubles, Pleasant Grove’s Veronica Irle and Morgan Ogden beat Tracy’s Yufan Dong and Upi Gill 6-2, 6-2.
Next up is the individual Sac-Joaquin Section championships Thursday and Friday at In Shape Sports Club West Lane, in Stockton. Tracy will send Guzman in the singles after she took second in the San Joaquin Athletic Association tournament, and Noonan and Geibig will also go as the second-place doubles team in the SJAA.
West will send Emma Bell and Jasmin Fonseca, who are the second-place doubles team from the Tri-City Athletic League.
