Three local students are among nine San Joaquin County students being honored at this year’s Every Student Succeeding Program at the county office of education on Wednesday, Feb. 27.

The countywide award is being presented to West High School senior Eric Chaverri, Stein High School senior Heidi Vasquez and seventh grader Ivan Blanco-Martinez of Wicklund School in Mountain House.

The Association of California School Administrators is hosting the 7 a.m. event at the San Joaquin County Office of Education, Education Service Center, 2707 Transworld Drive in Stockton.

Each of the students being recognized was nominated by officials at their individual schools for excelling in their studies despite the hardships they had to overcome in their lives.

Paul Hall, director of student services and curriculum for Tracy Unified School District, said that Hall said Chaverri was nominated by West school counselors for succeeding in school despite his diagnosis with leukemia.

Vasquez was nominated by her art teacher Roger Casillas, who discovered her hidden artistic talents after she was transferred to Stein after flunking out of her previous high school, Hall said.

Blanco-Martinez, a student in the Lammersville Unified School District, had a strong support staff with four members of the Wicklund Elementary School nominating him, according to Khushwinder Gill, assistant superintendent Lammersville Unified School District. Gill is also the president elect for the San Joaquin charter of the Association of California School Administrators.

Blanco-Martinez was spotlighted due to his school achievements in spite of being placed in foster care at a very young age. But he managed to transform his academic performance in the sixth grade, significantly improving his grades.

The awards ceremony begins at 7 a.m. and it is open to the public.

Out of the nine students being honored, a committee will choose one to represent San Joaquin County at the regional level.
