Castro Martial Arts of Tracy collected some of the top awards in the black belt and lower belt divisions at the Golden Gate Internationals karate tournament April 4 and 5 at the Santa Clara Hyatt Regency.

The tournament brought together more than a dozen competitive leagues representing a variety of styles for a weekend of competition in sport karate, forms, kickboxing, stick fighting and Philippines martial arts styles.

Instructor Julio Castro took 11 students from his Tracy academy, including nine from his Pro CSK Elite National Team. Competitors in the under-11 divisions were allowed to compete in black belt contests even if they haven’t achieved that rank yet.

Top competitors among the Pro CSK team included Nicholas Galvan, 9, who took first in both black belt continuous sparring and black belt point sparring in the 11-and-under flyweight division (55 pounds or less).

Also winning in both black belt continuous and black belt point sparring were Alejandro Alamilla, 11, in the 11U middleweight division (88 pounds or less), and Clay Smith, 11, in the 11U heavyweight division (88 pounds or more).

Julio Castro placed first in black belt continuous sparring and black belt point sparring in the men’s 18-and-over lightweight division.

In underbelt point sparring, Riana Syamsu, 7, won Grand Champion in the age 6-7 girls division and Alejandro Alamilla was Grand Champion in the 10-11 boys beginners division.
