The Coats 4 Kids drive, run by the Tracy African American Association and T&J Educational Supplies for Early Learners, started collecting outerwear Oct. 7.
The drive started last year as the brainchild of TAAA spokeswoman Toni Beckham to address a need for warm winter coats among children.
“It’s something that was needed,” Beckham said, “I’ve been very fortunate over my lifetime, and I definitely have the time to give back to the people who are less fortunate.”
Last year, residents donated 45 coats to the cause.
“Some of the kids were so happy,” she said, “I was in tears.”
Beckham’s goal this year is 100 coats.
Residents can drop off coats at T&J Educational Supplies, 320 W. 11th St. If people cannot deliver coats they want to donate, they can call 249-6644 to arrange for pickup.
The Coats 4 Kids drive will collect coats until Friday, Oct. 18. TAAA members will distribute coats to selected children at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at the Tracy Homes development between Second and Fourth streets.
