The boys team from Classic Gymnastics of Tracy became state champions this past weekend, beating five other teams at the Northern California Boys Gymnastics Association Level 6-10 State Championship meet on Saturday and Sunday at West High.
The Level 6 team of Colin Flores, 9, Tyler Flores, 9, Branden Dao, 7, and Aled de la Cruz, 10, won with a score of 185.300, finishing as the top team in three of the six events and in second place in the other three.
Eric Totman, who has coached the boys for three years, said they are an exciting team to coach because they’ve developed remarkable skills at a young age.
“They’re been to state championships before, but this is the first team to win a state championship title for Classic Gymnastics,” he said. “These guys have a lot of potential ahead of them.”
Totman said the full team qualified for the Men’s Region 1 Gymnastics Championships on April 12 in Phoenix, Ariz.
The team’s top performer, Colin Flores, recorded a first-place score of 63.850 all-around, including first place on the pommel horse (11.250), parallel bars (11.350) and high bar (10.250). Totman said the win qualified him for the state all-star team, which will compete against six-member teams from other U.S. states.
Tyler Flores placed third all-around (60.100), and Dao placed fourth all-around (59.350), with a first-place mark on the floor exercise.
All three competed in the Level 6, age 7-8 division based on their ages in December.
De la Cruz placed 11th in the 9-year-old division (57.250), based on his age in December. His scores included a first-place mark on the vault (9.550).
